ST. ANNE’S SURVIVORS RETURN TO COURT

Writer's picture: CHARLIE ANGUSCHARLIE ANGUS

Survivors of St. Anne’s Residential School will be back at the Ontario Superior Court on Tuesday as part of their ongoing battle for justice with the federal government. Edmund Metatawabin, representative of the St. Anne’s survivor’s organization, is arguing that the federal government breached their legal obligations by withholding thousands of pages of evidence that proved the widespread abuse and torture of children at St. Anne’s.

In December, lawyers for Minister Carolyn Bennett successfully argued that survivors whose cases were thrown out because the evidence was not provided could not challenge the government through the basic legal principle of procedural fairness.

In an unprecedented escalation against the survivors, the government has gone after St. Anne’s legal counsel Fay Brunning for costs. Metatawabin will be represented by other lawyers at the Toronto Superior Court hearing.

A public rally and press conference will be held at 9:15 at Ontario Superior Court in Toronto, located at 130 Queen Street West.
